About Anfield Road
Anfield Road was opened to the public in 1884 and was originally owned and managed by John Orrel, a brewer and a family friend of John Houlding, Anfield’s lease holder. Anfield Road started when Everton F.C. was banned from having their matches in Stanley Park and so Orrell allowed this Liverpool football club to play in the stadium for a minimal fee. Because the club had been receiving a lot from the sales of Anfield Road tickets, Houlding, who purchased the land from Orrell proposed that the rent be increased from 100 to 250 pounds per year but Everton refused to the proposal.
